Did you know…food dyes and colourings contain petroleum?

Originally made from coal tar, food dyes now come from an unrefined fuel source: petroleum. According to “Food Dyes: A Rainbow of Risks“, some dyes have even been banned because of their adverse effects on laboratory animals. Some of the foods that contain colourants: sports drinks, sodas, powdered mixes, energy drinks, flavoured yogurts, cereals, and even fish (ie/smoked salmon can look bright and colourful because of added colours!) Even some drugs (ie/Ritalin) can contain food colouring. The most common colorants are Red 40, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6, but watch out for words like “artificial colors” or “colors added”. If you don’t know if something contains colour, then ask and if you don’t want to take the risk, then just don’t buy it.
