Healthy as a Mule! (The Moscow Mule with Vitamin C)

moscow-mule-with-schramm-vodka-and-vitamin-c-nicole-porter-wellnessJust because I’m a nutritionist doesn’t mean I don’t like a good cocktail! But just like with food recipes, I like to switch up cocktail recipes to make them healthier.

Today’s recipe is a healthy twist on the Moscow Mule. On the best of days, the Moscow Mule is a light, refreshing drink, with a bite from the ginger, and some sour from the lime…and healthier if you ask the bartender to not use simple syrup, which they often do. But for even more of a health kick, I add vitamin C…in the crystal or powdered form.

The recipe here includes organic potato vodka from Schramm, made by Pemberton Distillery. And although a traditional Moscow Mule is made with Ginger Beer, I use homemade Ginger Ale. (If I don’t have time to make it from scratch, I use Bruce Cost Ginger Ale). Then add your vitamin C crystals, fresh lime juice and ice and voilà – you have a healthy summer cocktail and less guilt!

Have a great weekend and always remember to enjoy responsibly 🙂

Ingredients for the Moscow Mule

  • 2 oz Schramm Organic Potato Vodka (Use any kind of Vodka, preferably organic. If you’re into more of a Dark n Stormy, then you can use rum.)
  • 4 ounces homemade ginger beer (see recipe below; add water if you want to cut the sweet even more)
  • 1 tsp vitamin C crystals (ie/Natural Factors)
  • 1/2 ounce lime juice

Directions for Moscow Mule

  1. Squeeze the lime juice into a rock glass, Moscow Mule mug or a tall Collins glass
  2. Add the vodka, then the ginger beer
  3. Add the vitamin C crystals and stir until the crystals dissolve (about 30 seconds)
  4. Finish by adding ice cubes to fill to the rim and give one last stir
  5. Top with a lime garnish or mint leaf

Ingredients for Homemade Ginger Ale

This recipe below is from House and Home but I’ve removed the sugar and replaced with maple syrup and honey. You could also use 1 cup of honey if you don’t like the taste of maple.

  • 1/14 cups ginger, chopped
  • 3 strips lemon zest
  • ½ cup maple syrup
  • ½ cup unpasteurized, raw honey
  • 2 cups water
  • 36 oz soda
  • 3 tbsp freshed squeezed lemon/lime juice
  • ice
  • mint sprig

Directions for Homemade Ginger Ale

In a medium saucepan, place ginger, lemon zest, maple syrup, honey and water. Bring to a boil, stirring regularly. Reduce to a simmer; cook 10 minutes. Remove from heat; let stand 30 minutes. Pass through a fine-mesh sieve into a bowl. Cool ginger syrup and transfer to a mason jar. Refrigerate until ready to use. Add soda water when ready (about 2 oz of ginger syrup to 6 oz of soda water). Top with juice.
