Did you know…Ritalin can cause hyperactivity?

Did you know that Ritalin, the drug used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), may contain food colouring, an ingredient that may cause hyperactivity in children? Children with ADHD are characterized to have trouble paying attention, controlling impulsive behaviors (may act without thinking about what the result will be), or being overly active. Studies have shown that hyperactivity in children is related to food colouring. Yellow No 10 is among the most problematic additives. Other concerns with food colourings include potential toxicity (allergic reactions), liver stress from metabolizing the chemicals, and potential carcinogenicity. Before you decide on prescription medication for your children, do your research so you make a fully informed decision that is best for your child.
