Proper hydration, balanced nutrition, decreased screen time, and regular mindfulness are just a few habits that contribute to a good night’s sleep. But in those moments when you need a little help, valerian root might be your non-prescription alternative to prescription drugs like triazolam. The most common uses for this herb are to calm the nervous system. And according to Staying Healthy with Nutrition, the best-studied use of this mood-balancing herb is for insomnia. Of course you can take valerian root as a supplement, but since my preference is for my clients to rely on as little supplementation as possible, I typically recommend the warm, calming, relaxing tea. Note that since valerian root is ‘mood balancing’, it can also act as a stimulant to perk you up. In other words, don’t make the assumption that drinking more than 1 cup will result in a better sleep. Listen to your body and adjust your consumption accordingly.
